Pilates .. for Pregnancy

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Pregnancy is a significant time of change for a woman. Tremendous changes occur physically to the woman’s body especially the pelvis as the body prepares for birth.

Consequently, spinal, pelvic and abdominal conditions arise including separation of the outer abdominal muscles (diastasis rectus), decreased pelvic floor and abdominal strength, joint and spinal discomfort. These conditions vary between women and can possibly extend into the post partum period.

Modified Pilates Programs can be a great method for women in their pre and post partum period to improve their pelvic floor and abdominal support and rectify the above conditions. However, close guidance and supervision are essential so that the woman does not exacerbate any underlying problems. Women should seek advice regarding appropriate management for these conditions from their physiotherapist, general practitioner or obstetrician.
